Maritime chokepoints: daily transits and cargo capacity
Daily vessel counts and cargo capacity through 28 maritime chokepoints, from IMF PortWatch. This is where a trade shock becomes visible within days rather than quarters - the Red Sea diversions are legible in the Suez and Cape of Good Hope series.
Maritime chokepoints: daily transits and cargo capacity
Definitions and method
Derived from AIS vessel tracking: a transit is counted when a vessel crosses the chokepoint's defined polygon. Capacity is the sum of the deadweight capacity of transiting vessels, not the cargo actually carried, so it is an upper bound on volume. A chokepoint is stored as an area of kind 'chokepoint' - it is neither a country nor an aggregate.
